Color Study – Purple

Indigo and Violet (also know commonly as purple) used to be the color of royalty.  Physiologically violet light can correct skin problems and fevers.  Indigo/violet stimulates the brain, and has purifying and antiseptic and cooling effects.  It is said to balance the metabolism and suppress hunger.  Emotionally it can evoke spirituality, intuition, inspiration, contemplation, and purification. 
Deep violets can be a rich color choice, making a space look luxurious and elegant.  Light violets can have a soothing or even playful effect on a space.

Color Study – Blue

Blue is one of the colors on the color wheel that has the most amount of attributes in a wide variety.  Physiologically blue brings cooling and soothing effects to the thyroid gland and throat.  The color blue can lower blood pressure and deeper blues are said to have a pain relieving effect.  Blue-green decreases infections and soothes anxious nerves and can also correct an immune system.  Emotional effects are just as impressive and various.  Blues can give the effect of peace, spaciousness, hope, faith, flexibility, and acceptance.  Blue-green is said to promote mental calmness, concentration, confidence, and refreshment.
Blue is an amazing color that has many uses.  Many hospitals and medical facilities use the color blue or blue-green to calm and heal.  Blue has so many different shades and tones that it can be used in almost any space.  From playful to elegance, blue could be the easiest color to manipulate and all of its properties make it a great color choice for almost any space.

Color Study – Green

Green is a very versatile color.  In some cases green can be used as a faux neutral, which means it can act like a neutral color like white, black, or tan in conjunction with other colors.  Green can effect the heart and balance circulation.  It can increase relaxation and promotes healing.  Emotionally it is harmonizing, relaxing and peaceful.  It can cause calmness and sincerity, contentment and generosity.
Green can be used in many different types of spaces and can accomplish many types of different moods.  Green is a great color to try if your feeling a bit hesitant about putting color on a wall.

Color Study – Yellow

The color yellow also has some amazing physiological and emotional effects as well.  Yellow can stimulate the brain and nervous system.  It can cause mental alertness and it can also activate muscles.  Emotionally yellow evokes happiness, mental stimulation, and optimism.
Yellow would be a great color for a room with an elderly loved one, or in a learning environment.

Color Study – Orange

The physiological effects of the color orange were a little bit surprising to me.  Orange is said to stimulate the immune system.  It also stimulates the lungs, pancreas, and the digestive system.  The emotional effects are joy, security, and creativity.
With all these amazing properties that the color orange has I wonder why more hospitals or medical facilities aren’t painted orange.  Orange would be a great color to do a child’s room to evoke joy and development, or perhaps in an office or craft room to evoke creativity.

Color Study – Pink

The color pink,  is of course related to the color red, hence the physiological effects are somewhat similar.  Pink stimulates the body just as the color red does but instead, pink stimulates more gently.  In opposition to red, pink can actually cause muscles to relax.  The emotional effects are quite opposite those of the color red.  Pink evokes calmness, nurturing, kindness and unselfish love.
Pink is sometimes used in prisons to calm inmates or in visitors locker rooms to relax a rivaling sports team.  Pink is a often a great choice of color for rooms that we like to relax in, but good luck trying to get your husband to agree

Color Study – Red

To some, choosing a color for a room can be overwhelming.  To others, it’s an exciting creative, process.  Color may be one of the most important tools when trying to accomplish a mood, or emotion, or style in a space.  Color has been used for centuries by artists to convey certain emotions in their works of art to evoke a feeling or response from their audience.  Each color has it’s own physiological and emotional effect on us, this is the study of those effects…

Red:

The physiological effect of the color red is quite intense compared to other colors.  Red stimulates the heart and increases cirrculation.  Red is also said to increase strength and stamina.
The emotional effects of the color red are in direct relation to the physiological effects.  The emotions that the color red evokes are strength, warmth, sentuallity, assertion, anger and even impatience.
The color red can be a bold choice for a room so when choosing a red try to think of what emotions you want the room to convey.

Wall Treatments

Want an elegant but subtle way to add interest to your walls without using wallpaper?  Use a damask treatment, by alternating flat and gloss paint of the same hue in a pattern or stripe.  This treatment will be subtle, but will add interest and elegance.
